The 3-month trial for Toronto's new garbage bins is complete. Hopefully, these disasters will not be approved. We won't know until 2006.
This picture is somewhat typical of the problems. The things are always overflowing -- frequently worse than shown here -- and block the sidewalk with their huge ads. A beautiful flower bin -- probably maintained by the Danforth Business Improvement Area -- is rendered invisible and replaced by the lit ads. The busy sidewalk is narrowed, creating pedestrian congestion.
I know the City needs the money, but it should be able to find it in better ways. Every dollar of advertising revenue is accompanied by a decline in the appeal of a neighbourhood.
