Brantford Red Sox 5, Toronto Maple Leafs 3

I was at the game again on Sunday, and watched the Leafs lose a close game in extra innings. I think I must be bad luck for the team. Shortly after I started watching games they ended a home winning streak that was several dozen games long! I've seen them lose 2 or 3 times at home now, and have some close calls. My perception of the team's history is that they usually dominate the league.

Anyway, it was a beautiful day at Christie Pits and a big crowd was on hand. Still, there was plenty of room for many more people to come.

I arrived in the 3rd inning just in time to see Rich Butler knock in the tying run to make it 1-1. In the 4th inning the Leafs scored a second run on a sac fly. And in the 5th, the Leafs scored when Gamin Teague singled, stole second on a pitch out, and scored on a hit-and-run single by Rich Butler. It was 3-1 and looking good for Toronto.

But in the 6th, Brantford got a run on a walk and two singles. Then they tied it up in the 8th inning on fielder's choice to second base, with the sacks full. So, it went into extra innings.

In the 11th Brantford put some more runs on the board to take the lead 5-3. The first run came after a double, a good sacrifice bunt and then a RBI single through the pulled-in infield. A double and a sac fly to (very short) left field brought in the last run.

As usual, it was a lot of fun to be at the game. Halfway through, I moved down and was standing against the fence near the Brantford bullpen. It was fun to be able to hear those guys talk. At one point they realized that one of them was going to have to bat because the DH had been moved to first base. A coach came down and asked them to decide amongst themselves who the best hitter would be.

Late in the game the home plate umpire ejected one of the Red Sox. Quite a bit of discussion and delay ensued, during which I heard an uninvolved player ask the 1st base ump if this was the other ump's "first game".

Anyway, these games at Christie Pits are great. Some time I'll type the schedule up and put in online. But, I think they do play every Sunday at 2pm here in Toronto.
